Made in over 15 regions throughout Italy, Lagrein is a true Italian classic. Its characteristic velvety fullness and soft acidity make it a very interesting wine to try. Flavours of ripe plums and violets combine with noble, spicy tones. Its velvety tannins and wintergreen finish make it a perfect match for hearty Italian dishes and sharp cheeses. The grape is grown in the shadow of the majestic Dolomites, so it's not difficult to see why it is so popular.
Lagrein Wine a Northern Italian Classic
The grape is native to Trentino, in northern Italy. It is considered one of the oldest varieties of grape in the area. Its history dates back to 1379, but its current presence is only limited in this area. Although Lagrein is closely related to Schiava Gentile and Cabernet Franc, the latter is arguably the most famous. While it shares similar characteristics with both, this variety is much more complex than the former.
Like its neighbour, Sangiovese, Lagrein is an ancient grape variety that grows in sunny vineyards in Alto Adige. It has a deep, full-bodied flavour and mellow tannins. This varietal is packed with flavours of dark berry fruits, including chocolate and violet. Its acidity and freshness make it a perfect red wine for hot summer days.
