Dear Abbey Cafe, Moonee Ponds, Melbourne
Dear Abbey is part of a modern day renaissance of the former Wesleyan church at 23 A Gladstone Street Moonee Ponds. This historic landmark church building has been converted into a stunning bright cafe space. Whilst a lost of its old charm has been retained, a modern twist has been applied, making it a vibrant edgy space. The hallmark of the church is the iconic spire that has been enhanced with the addition of a cafe pavilion/terrace. This pavilion is a modern steel structure, which is totally transparent maintaining the visual integrity of the church.
Dear Abbey is the brainchild of cafe operators Joe Versace and Aprim michael, the team that brought you Hey Jude in Essendon and Little Sister in East Keilor. It has been 4 years in the making from its inception. Extensive consultation with council and heritage advisors resulted in the modern day renaissance of this landmark church building. The cafe has been designed by hospitality architects Eon Design. The cutting edge design show cases the 100 year old church charm and makes subtle reference to this landmark structure by the creation of the modern steel structure.
The cafe is open 7am - 4:30pm, 7 days a week. The cafe offers breakfast and lunch and serves Where's Marcel specialty coffee by some of the best local baristas. The chef behind Dear Abbey is Burmese born Chef Joey Soo, formerly Hey Jude and Little Sister, but has also extensive fine dining experience. The Dear Abbey signature dish is inspired by Joeys Burmese heritage. A 4 hour braised Burmese pork belly, with red cabbage, carrot , coriander, honey soy glaze, black pudding and angel tears. There are any other innovative dishes sustained by local fresh produce with a modern spin.
Dear Abbey is unique. A coffee and food destination like no other. This landmark location dating back to 1890 and the introduction of modern day steel pavilion makes this location extremely special. Dear Abbey is definitely and must for the cafe dweller
