Gavi Wine - AKA Cortese di Gavi

Gavi, or Cortese di Gavi, is a popular white wine from the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. The wine was named after Gavi in Lecco province, where it was first made.

Gavi is made with 100% Cortese grapes – a grape variety that’s more robust than many other Italian white varieties. The same grape is used in the neighbouring wine Franciacorta and also produces a sparkling version called “frizzante”

Gavi  Wine 100% Cortese grapes.

Cortese grapes, are a rare Italian white variety that’s most commonly found in the Piedmont region.

Cortese grapes are different from many other Italian white varieties because they're more robust and tend to have a fuller body than other grapes. They also have an intense acidity and a distinctly fruity flavour.

Being more robust means their juice is thicker and has a higher skin-to-juice ratio. The result of this is that Cortese wines have high acidity, which makes them some of the most acidic wines in the world.

Gavi wines and the aging process

Gavi wines spend less time aging in oak barrels and more time aging in stainless steel tanks, which helps to preserve their crisp acidity. Gavi wines are similar to Sauvignon Blanc but have higher levels of acidity.

Gavi Wines are typically light-bodied and similar to Sauvignon Blanc.

Gavi is a light-bodied wine, but it's not as light as Sauvignon Blanc. The grape variety used to make Gavi has less acidity than Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, which means that the wines have a lighter body than those two other whites. The flavour profile of Gavi is also similar to Sauvignon Blanc—they're both made from the same grape variety—but their terroir differs slightly.

They make great summer wines because they're so crisp and refreshing.

Gavi is a great wine to try if you want something easy-drinking and refreshing with a nice acidity that pairs well with food. It's also relatively inexpensive, making it an affordable option for casual get-togethers where you might have people who aren't as into wine as you are.

The best part about Gavi is how approachable they are as the Gavi is known to be crisp and refreshing: Wine Cart has a fantastic range of this amazing Italian wine.

To understand why Gavi is such a good match for food, let's first take a look at its flavours. While most wines are made up of around 60% water, which gives them their lightness and mouthfeel, Gavi is closer to 80%. The reason for this is the grape variety used in the production: Cortese. It has thin skin that doesn't require as much time on the vine as other grapes—and it helps keep the wine light and fruity.
